Fargo holds two thirds of the state's listed capacity, and unusually for a city its size, that capacity is not all job-shop work. The listings there run from dedicated 3D printing and design businesses through commercial print and engineering-supply firms that added additive to an existing menu, to filament manufacturing and a prosthetics-and-orthotics specialist that prints patient-specific devices. Fargo is also where NDSU and its research and technology park sit, which is why the design-services end of the market is deeper here than the population would predict. Grand Forks carries two listings and is the state's most interesting market relative to its size. UND runs one of the country's larger aviation programmes, the Grand Sky business park next to Grand Forks Air Force Base has anchored a genuine unmanned-aircraft cluster, and the Northern Plains UAS test site operates from the same corridor. Dickinson is the westernmost listing, roughly 100 miles beyond Bismarck and the nearest thing the Bakken has to local capacity. For an operator in Williston or Watford City, Dickinson is two hours closer than anything else in the state.
Several absences matter as much as the counts. Minot hosts an Air Force base and a substantial regional economy; Williston sits at the centre of the Bakken; Wahpeton is home to NDSCS and its manufacturing and technical programmes; Jamestown and Devils Lake both carry real fabrication demand. How to Choose a North Dakota Provider
Treat the state as one market. In a 15-provider state spread across 300 miles, ruling out shops on drive time leaves you with almost nothing. Ask what a shop charges to ship a finished part to your town and add it to the quote — it is usually a rounding error next to the difference between two shops' machine time.
Check what kind of shop you are talking to. Several North Dakota listings are commercial print, sign and repro businesses that added 3D printing alongside an existing service.
