The short version: Polymaker PolyMide PA6-CF is the best nylon for engineering parts that have to last, and MatterHackers NylonX is the easiest carbon-fibre nylon to succeed with on a first attempt. If you want unfilled nylon's flexibility rather than stiffness, Overture Nylon is the value pick and Taulman3D Bridge is the most forgiving to learn on. But the brand matters far less here than it does with PLA: nylon punishes a wet spool and a drafty printer more than any other common filament, and no roll on this list will save a setup that skips drying.
Nylon is where FDM stops being a prototyping material and starts being a parts material. It is the one common filament that survives wear — gears that mesh thousands of times, hinges that flex without snapping, bushings that rub. Read This Before You Buy a Roll
Nylon is the only filament on this site where the setup matters more than the material choice. Three things are effectively mandatory, and buying the filament without them wastes the filament:
- A dryer you can print from. Nylon absorbs moisture faster than any other common filament — fast enough that a roll left out overnight can print visibly worse the next morning. Dry at roughly 70–80°C for 6–12 hours, then feed the printer directly from a heated box. The filament dry box guide covers what to buy.
- An enclosure, or at minimum a genuinely draft-free spot. Nylon shrinks significantly as it cools, and a cold draft across a tall part is what turns a good print into a banana. See the enclosure guide.
- A hardened nozzle, if and only if you are buying a carbon-fibre or glass-filled grade. Filled nylon eats brass. The nozzle guide explains the trade-offs.
If you are not willing to do all three, buy PETG instead and be happier. That is a genuine recommendation, not a hedge.

Polymaker PolyMide PA6-CF — Best Engineering Nylon
PA6-CF is the roll to reach for when the part is doing real work. PA6 is the stronger, stiffer, more heat-resistant nylon base, and the chopped carbon fibre adds rigidity while cutting the warping that makes unfilled PA6 miserable to print. The result is a part that holds its shape under load and at temperature — the right choice for structural brackets, tooling, jigs that sit near heat, and mechanical components that must not creep. It costs more and it demands the full setup above. When the part matters, PolyMide PA6-CF earns it.
MatterHackers NylonX — Best First Carbon-Fibre Nylon
NylonX is the most widely used carbon-fibre nylon for good reason: it is noticeably more forgiving than plain nylon while giving most of the benefit. The fibre loading cuts shrinkage, so parts warp far less and hold dimensions better, and the matte black finish hides layer lines well on functional parts. It is stiffer and slightly more brittle than unfilled nylon, which is the trade you are making. If you are stepping into nylon for the first time and want a realistic chance of a good part on attempt one, NylonX is the place to start — with a hardened nozzle fitted.
Overture Nylon — Best Value Unfilled Nylon
Unfilled nylon is a different material from the filled grades, not just a cheaper one. It is less stiff and more flexible, and that flexibility is exactly what you want for living hinges, snap fits, cable guides and parts that must bend repeatedly without cracking. Overture's rolls arrive sealed with desiccant, which matters more here than on any other material. It warps more than filled nylon and needs the enclosure, but for wear parts that should flex rather than resist, Overture Nylon is the sensible-value option.
Taulman3D Bridge Nylon — Most Forgiving Plain Nylon
Taulman has been making nylon for 3D printing longer than most of the market has existed, and Bridge is their answer to "nylon is too hard." It prints at lower temperatures than typical nylon and adheres to the bed more willingly, which removes two of the three usual failure points. It is not the stiffest or the strongest roll here, but it is the one most likely to produce a usable part while you are still learning what nylon wants. Bridge Nylon is a good first plain nylon.
eSUN ePA-CF — Best Budget Carbon-Fibre Nylon
When you are iterating on a functional part and expect to print it five times before it is right, premium filled nylon gets expensive quickly. eSUN's carbon-fibre nylon is the value play: diameter tolerance is not as tight as the premium rolls and it wants a thorough dry and some tuning, but it prints genuinely usable functional parts at a price that makes iteration painless. eSUN ePA-CF is the roll to burn through while you converge on a design.
