The short version: the best dual extruder 3D printers in 2026 are the enclosed IDEX machines, because two independent nozzles inside a heated chamber are the only straightforward way to print soluble supports under ABS or ASA. Two nozzles exist so that two genuinely different polymers can be printed in one job without ever sharing a melt zone — a model in PLA and its supports in PVA, a rigid frame with a TPU gasket, ABS held up by HIPS. Buy on that basis or you will overpay for the wrong mechanism.

Every machine sold as "dual" or "multi" is one of these four, and the mechanism decides the waste, the failure modes and the price.

The row that matters most is the third column. A single-nozzle changer has to flush the previous material completely out of the melt zone on every swap and throw it away, and on a part with supports on hundreds of layers that discarded purge can outweigh the model. Two separate nozzles have nothing to flush. That is the whole structural argument for dual extrusion, and it is why soluble supports are practical on an IDEX machine and expensive on a changer.

The fourth column is the argument for IDEX specifically over a shared carriage. When both nozzles sit on one gantry, the hot idle nozzle travels over your part for the entire print, and hot plastic drips. Machines manage it with wipe walls and standby temperatures, but they are managing a problem IDEX does not have — an independent carriage parks off the bed, gets wiped, and comes back clean.

What you pay instead is time. Nozzle offset calibration is a hands-on routine here rather than a wizard, bed levelling matters more than on a self-calibrating machine, and the open frame limits you to PLA, PETG and TPU in practice — so PVA supports yes, HIPS under ABS no. This is the tier where dual extrusion stops being a feature and becomes infrastructure: a heated chamber, filament runout and jam detection, dual extruders rated for engineering polymers, and the enclosure and airflow to run them. Nylon, polycarbonate and carbon-fibre blends need chamber temperature to reach their published strength, and their soluble support partners need the same environment.

Best alternative — a four-slot changer, if you wanted colour all along

A real share of people searching for a dual extruder want a multicoloured model, and for that job a second nozzle is the wrong purchase: two nozzles give you two colours, while a changer gives you four or more for less money. What else you need to budget for

  • A dual-spool heated dry box — two nozzles means two spools loaded for weeks. PVA in particular can be finished by one humid weekend on an open shelf. Compare options in our dry box guide.

  • Slicer time. Budget an evening for offset calibration and profile setup before you expect a good two-material part. Every IDEX machine ships with a calibration print; run it, and run it again after any nozzle change.

The three settings that decide whether it works

Nozzle offset. The two nozzles must agree on the origin in X, Y and Z to a fraction of a layer height. Everything else is downstream of this, and an offset error looks like a hundred different problems — bad interfaces, ghost lines, a second material that will not stick. Run the calibration print and enter the numbers, do not eyeball it.

Standby temperature and a prime tower. Drop the idle nozzle below its melting range while it waits, and prime it back up on a tower or wipe wall before it touches the model. This is what stops ooze from landing on your part, and on a shared-carriage machine it is not optional.

Zero Z-gap on soluble interfaces. With same-material supports you leave a deliberate air gap so they snap off. With a soluble second material you close it completely — the support is leaving chemically, and a gap only buys you a rougher surface. Two or three interface layers in the support material, none in the model.

When not to buy one

Most FDM work is one material, and a second nozzle adds a calibration surface, a maintenance surface and a failure mode to a machine that did not have them. If your prints are functional parts in PETG, a better single-nozzle printer and good filament will serve you far better than a mediocre dual.

The honest test is frequency. Sealed internal cavities, captive assemblies printed in one piece and cosmetic overhangs that cannot carry a support scar are the jobs only a second material solves — and if they come up a handful of times a year, quote them out first.
