What Actually Gets Printed
Dimensional letters and logo marks. Not plain flat-faced signage — that belongs on a router. Printing earns its place on script and cursive forms with undercuts, bevelled or tapered faces, logo marks with real relief, and letters with an integrated cavity for backlighting.
Point-of-sale and point-of-purchase units. Counter displays, tester stands, shelf-edge fittings, tray inserts, bottle and pack cradles. Small, geometrically specific to one product, and needed in tens rather than thousands.
Product replicas and hero dummies. An oversized version of the product itself — a bottle, a shoe, a handset, a cosmetic pack — at two to twenty times scale. This is printing's home ground in retail, because the geometry is already in CAD from the packaging work and nothing else makes that shape economically once.
Custom mounts and armatures. The parts that hold real product on a plinth or wall at an exact angle, invisibly. Every one is bespoke to a product and a fixture, quantities are small, and precision matters more than appearance.
Props and window scenography. Oversized objects, sculptural elements, seasonal builds. Often printed in sections and bonded, over an internal frame. This is adjacent to cosplay and prop work, with a commercial deadline and a venue's fire officer attached.
Scale environment models. Store concepts and fixture mock-ups reviewed before a rollout commits — the same job as an architectural model, with fixtures instead of buildings.
Where Printing Is the Wrong Tool

Flat sheet work. Anything you could cut from acrylic, PVC or aluminium composite and fold or bond is faster and cheaper routed or laser-cut. Printing a flat panel is paying for volume you did not need.
Large simple volumes. A plain oversized cube, cylinder or block is cheaper carved from EPS foam and hard-coated, and it weighs a fraction of a printed one. Foam remains the default for big, simple and light.

The Finish Is the Product
In most 3D printing categories the print is the job. In retail, the print is the substrate.
A raw printed surface carries layer lines. Under retail lighting, at reading distance, from a customer standing still and looking directly at it, those lines read as cheap. The route to a display-grade surface is filling, sanding, priming, sanding again, spraying to a colour reference and clear-coating to a stated gloss. - Colour by reference, not by material. Pantone or RAL, sprayed and signed off on a sample chip. Stock filament and powder colours vary between batches and never match a brand book.
- Gloss level, stated. Matt, satin and gloss on the same colour look like three different colours in a lit store, and gloss is unforgiving of any sanding you skipped.
- One paint batch per rollout. Two batches on adjacent units is visible; on units in different stores, nobody will ever notice.
- Vinyl wrap as an alternative. For large, simply curved surfaces, wrapping is faster and cheaper than spraying and gives an exact brand colour. It will not follow tight relief or sharp internal corners.
Where a part is backlit, the surface question inverts: you want translucency and even diffusion, so a white or natural material printed with a controlled wall thickness matters more than the paint, and the finish is applied to the returns and edges rather than the face.
Size, Sections and Seams
Anything much beyond a metre is printed in pieces and joined, so the real question is not how big but where the splits fall. Ask three things of any sectioned build. Where do the seams land — insist on a natural edge or a shadow line rather than across a visible face. How are sections registered and joined — dowels or printed keys plus adhesive, then filled and sanded, not butt-glued. And what carries the load — a large prop needs an internal armature and a weighted base, because a hollow printed shell is stiff for its weight and still light enough to be knocked over.

The Venue Rules That Reject Finished Builds

Shopping centres, airports, transport hubs and exhibition halls impose fire-reaction requirements on display materials, and commodity PLA and PETG carry no classification. Ask the centre management, the venue or the principal contractor for the specific standard at briefing stage, then either source a flame-retardant grade or agree a compliant coating system, and keep the certificate with the build. Specifying a Rollout
One window build and forty stores are different purchases. For a rollout, send the artwork in a form the shop can build from — 3D geometry where it exists, and a vector plus a stated depth and bevel where it does not. Fix the colour references, the gloss level and the fixing method in the same document. Give the quantity, the delivery split by store and the install dates, because staged delivery changes the schedule more than the count does. Ask for one fully finished first-off, signed off before the batch runs, and specify packaging — a display piece is worth nothing if it arrives scuffed, and finished parts need individual protection rather than a shared box.
Two commercial points worth writing down. Ask for the finishing cost per unit as a separate line, because it does not fall with volume the way the print does.
