It came out of the machine sharp, it went through the alcohol, it sat under UV for an hour, and it still feels greasy between your fingers. Sticky resin prints are not one failure with one fix — the surface can be tacky because the wash never removed the liquid layer, because the cure could not reach it, or because there is still resin inside the model working its way out. Each leaves a different kind of sticky, and the wrong fix makes two of them permanently worse. Work out which one you have before the print goes back under the lamp — and if the finish is the whole point of the part, a shop with a validated process is a legitimate answer too.

Put a glove on, pick the print up, and pay attention to where it is tacky rather than how tacky it is.

That last row is worth knowing because the instinctive response to a sticky print — longer in the alcohol, longer under the lamp — is exactly how you produce it.
1. The Alcohol Stops Working Long Before It Looks Dirty
Isopropyl alcohol dissolves uncured resin up to a limit. As it approaches saturation it stops removing resin and starts leaving a film behind, so a bath that has cleaned twenty prints is not weak solvent — it is thin resin that smells like solvent. The print comes out wet, the alcohol flashes off, and what stays on the surface is the resin the bath gave back.
Two things fix this, and neither is scrubbing harder:
- Concentration. Use 99% rather than the 70% sold as rubbing alcohol. A 70% bottle is nearly a third water, and water contributes nothing to dissolving photopolymer. A gallon of 99% IPA is the cheapest single improvement most people can make to their surface finish.
- Two baths, in sequence. A dirty first bath takes the bulk off — two to three minutes with agitation. A clean second bath does the final rinse, one to two minutes, and never touches a dirty print. When the first bath goes cloudy, retire it and promote the second.
Agitation matters more than soak time. Stirring, a magnetic spinner or a sealed wash basket moves saturated alcohol away from the surface; a print sitting still in a tub sits in its own dissolved resin. For deep cavities and lattice work, a heated ultrasonic cleaner reaches what stirring cannot — keep cycles to two or three minutes, because cavitation snaps thin unsupported features off a green print.
And handle all of it in nitrile gloves. A tacky print is by definition still wearing liquid photopolymer, which is a skin sensitiser — the kind of exposure that causes no reaction at all until the day it causes a permanent one. 2. Tacky Only in the Recesses
If the exposed faces are clean and your fingertip finds tack inside undercuts, between fingers and teeth, or down in surface texture, the wash was too gentle rather than too short. Surface tension holds resin in fine geometry and a still bath does not disturb it.
Work the geometry directly: a soft brush in the dirty bath, compressed air to blow resin out of crevices before the print goes near alcohol, an ultrasonic cycle for anything you cannot see into, then the clean rinse. Do all of it before the first UV exposure — once a film is cured onto detail it becomes physical texture, and the only fix left is sanding.
3. Oxygen Inhibition: The Cure That Never Reaches the Surface
This is the one that confounds people who did everything else right. Photopolymer cures by a free-radical chain reaction, and atmospheric oxygen quenches those radicals. The bulk hardens normally because oxygen cannot get in — but at the boundary between resin and air the reaction is suppressed and the outermost few microns stay soft. That is why a print can be rock hard, dimensionally perfect, and still feel greasy after an hour in a cure chamber. More time in air does not solve it, because the air is the problem.
Remove the oxygen instead:
- Cure under water. Submerge the print in a clear container of water and cure it there. Three to five minutes usually takes the tack off completely, and it costs nothing.
- Cure in a sealed bag. A weaker version of the same thing, and easier on prints with cavities that would trap water.
- Glycerin. Works identically to water and rinses off warm. Preferred for pieces that should not get wet.

4. Under-Cured: Wavelength, Power and Rotation
Three ways a cure fails even when the timer says it ran.
Wrong wavelength. Almost every consumer resin is formulated for 405nm. Generic UV lamps and some nail dryers emit at 365nm or run a broad, weak spectrum, and a resin that absorbs poorly at the emitted wavelength cures slowly and incompletely however long the lamp runs. Check the figure on the lamp against the figure on the bottle.
Uneven exposure. A lamp pointed at a model from one side cures that side. Reflective chamber walls and a turntable exist to solve exactly this, and hand-rotating a print two or three times through a cure is what produces prints tacky in patches — always the same patches, the ones that faced away. That is the main reason a purpose-built wash and cure station outperforms a lamp and a box of foil; the comparison across current machines is in best resin wash and cure stations. If you are buying, chamber size decides whether you use it properly — ELEGOO's US store and Anycubic's US store both list interior dimensions, and a chamber your largest print does not fit is one you will work around.
Curing while still wet. Alcohol left on the surface swells the top layer and carries UV energy away as it evaporates; water left on a water-washable print does something similar. Let the print dry fully — compressed air, or an hour in still air — before any UV. A print that goes under the lamp visibly damp will come out soft.
And the resin itself. Cold resin is viscous, drains badly and leaves a thicker film to wash off; below about 20°C it also cures less completely in the vat. Keep the printer between 20 and 30°C, shake the bottle so settled pigment and photoinitiator are redistributed, and treat one that has spent two summers in a garage as suspect rather than as a control in your experiment. Buy in the quantity you will actually use — Chitu Systems' Conjure standard resin in 10kg if you print constantly, 1kg at a time and dated on the label if you do not. 5. It Went Sticky Again a Week Later
A print that was clean on Monday and has one greasy patch on Friday is not a curing problem. It is a reservoir problem: the model printed hollow, or has internal geometry that traps liquid, and there is uncured resin sitting inside it. Warmth thins that resin and it migrates out through a pinhole, a layer seam or a support scar.
Two drain holes, at opposite ends of the cavity, oriented so resin runs out as it prints. One hole airlocks and does not drain. Blow the cavity out with compressed air before washing, wash, drain again, then cure. For a print already weeping, open a drain hole, flush the cavity with clean alcohol, dry it and re-cure.
6. The Opposite Failure, So You Do Not Create It
Alcohol does not only dissolve uncured resin — given time it swells cured resin too. A print soaked for twenty minutes comes out softened and whitened, thin features go chalky, and after a long cure it snaps under finger pressure. Five minutes total across both baths is plenty.
Over-curing compounds it: UV keeps cross-linking long after the surface is hard, and over-cured prints yellow and grow brittle at thin edges and support scars. The right number on the cure timer is minutes, not hours — start at three to five for a miniature and stop as soon as the tack is gone.
Water-Washable Resin Has Its Own Version of This
Switching to water-washable resin removes the solvent bath and, for a lot of people, the ventilation constraint that comes with it. It does not remove this article — it changes which line of the table you land on.
Water dissolves uncured resin much more slowly than alcohol and the rate falls off sharply when it is cold, so a quick cold rinse that looks complete leaves a film. Use warm water, agitate, give it longer than you would give alcohol, and dry completely before curing. The wash water is then contaminated with liquid photopolymer: it does not go down a drain. Cure it solid in sunlight until the residue is inert and bin it as solid waste — the same rule as alcohol sludge, for the same reason.
When to Stop Re-Curing and Send It Out
There is a point where this stops being economic. If the part is going to a client, going to be painted, or going in a photograph on Thursday, a fourth round of wash-and-cure roulette costs more than the print does. Service bureaux run fresh solvent, sealed wash cycles and calibrated exposure as process control — exactly the variability that is expensive to remove from a kitchen-table workflow. The provider directory lists shops by location and process, and a quote on a resin part usually lands below the value of the evenings you would spend on it.
