3D Printing Services for Jewelry and Casting Patterns

3D printing services for jewelry get hired for one of two reasons: you have a design that would take two days to carve and you need six variants of it by Friday, or you do not want to own a machine and a wash-and-cure bench to produce a handful of patterns a month. Either way, the thing you are buying is almost never a finished piece of jewelry. It is a castable pattern — a wax-loaded photopolymer model that goes into investment, burns out, and leaves a cavity your caster fills with metal. Getting that handoff right is most of what separates a clean pour from a flask full of ash. This guide covers what to send out, what to keep, what actually drives the price, and how to check a provider knows jewelry work rather than general prototyping. What Jewelers Actually Outsource

Four jobs, and knowing which one you are ordering settles the material and the vendor before anyone quotes.

Castable patterns for lost-wax casting. The core job. Rings, pendants, signet faces, bezels, filigree, class and club rings, memorial pieces. Printed in a wax-loaded castable photopolymer, sprued, invested, burned out, cast. This is where printing has genuinely displaced hand carving for anything with symmetry, repetition or a CAD origin.

Fit and proportion models. A ring in cheap grey resin, printed to check the profile on a hand before anyone commits metal. Not castable, not precious, and any competent resin bureau can run it overnight for very little. Skipping this step is the most common way a client-approved render becomes a piece nobody wants to wear.

Master patterns for rubber moulding. If a design will be produced repeatedly, you print a master, cast it in silver or brass, then cut a mould from that metal master and inject waxes from it forever. Print the master to a higher standard than you would a one-off — every flaw in it is reproduced in every wax that follows.

Presentation and sales models. Oversized display pieces, trade-show samples, showroom props. These are ordinary printing jobs and can go to a general shop.

What is not on that list is the finished, set, polished piece. A printing service produces geometry. The bench work stays with a jeweler.

Castable Patterns vs Direct Metal

Two genuinely different services get confused at quote time, and the price gap is roughly an order of magnitude.

The default is print a pattern, cast the metal. You get real cast gold, silver or platinum with the metallurgy and the finish the trade expects, at a pattern cost measured in a few dollars of resin. Every design that can be cast should be made this way.

The exception is geometry that investment casting cannot release — captive interlocking elements printed already assembled, internal lattices, undercuts no investment will let go of. That needs direct metal 3D printing, which prints the piece in precious or non-precious powder and needs industrial equipment, an inert atmosphere and post-machining. Bureaus that offer it exist; the parts come out with a granular as-printed surface that needs substantial finishing, and the price reflects a machine you are renting time on rather than a resin you are consuming.

If you are unsure which one your design needs, send it to a caster before you send it to a printer. They will tell you in a sentence whether it releases.

How Pricing Works

Four drivers, and only one of them behaves the way people expect.

Plate height, not part count. On an LCD or DLP machine the whole layer images at once, so print time is set by the height of the tallest part on the plate. Twenty rings nested flat take roughly the same machine hours as one. This is why bureaus quote small jewelry orders against a minimum charge and why per-piece cost collapses once you batch — if you have five designs coming, send them together.

Resin type. Castable resin costs meaningfully more per litre than standard model resin, and the volume of a ring is small enough that this rarely dominates. It matters at volume and for large pieces.

Hand labour after the print. Wash, cure, support removal and inspection on a delicate filigree pattern is careful manual work, and on fine geometry it can exceed the machine cost. A shop quoting jewelry properly is quoting labour more than material.

Everything after the pattern. Casting, cleanup, setting and finishing are separate services with separate pricing, often from a separate vendor. A pattern quote is not a jewelry quote. Our general breakdown of what 3D printing actually costs covers the wider pricing model.

How to Spec the Order

State these five things and most of what goes wrong will not.

Resin, by name. "Castable" is a category, not a spec. Ask which castable resin the shop stocks, then pass that name to whoever burns out the flask. This single line prevents the most common failure in the whole workflow.

Final size, and who applied the allowance. Send the file at the size you want the pattern printed, and say explicitly whether you have already added your finishing allowance. Two people each adding a quarter size is a ring that comes back loose.

Which surfaces are critical. Bezel seats, prong tips, shank profile and any surface that will not be filed carry the design; the sprue area does not. Say so, because it drives orientation and support placement. A support scar on a bezel face becomes a scar in the metal, and printers who do not do jewelry do not know that on their own. Wall and wire minimums, checked against the metal. Fine detail prints far below what casts. A pattern with a 0.3 mm prong resolves beautifully on a good machine and will not fill in silver. Get the minimums from your caster for the specific metal and check the model against them before you order — a print that cannot cast is a wasted week.

Sprue intent. Say whether you want the pattern sprued in CAD or left for the caster to sprue by hand. Both are normal; a mismatch means either a missing feed or a sprue cut off and redone.

Vetting a Provider

Five questions, in the order that eliminates fastest.

  1. Which castable resins do you keep in the vat? Named resins, kept in stock, is the answer you want. "We can order one in" means a vat change and a recalibration on your job.
  2. What is your XY pixel size? Jewelry-capable machines sit in the tens of microns. Anything coarser will show stair-stepping on a curved shank that no amount of polishing removes.
  3. How do you handle supports on critical faces? You want a shop that asks which faces matter before it orients.
  4. Have you cast from your own patterns? A printer that has run its own patterns through burnout understands why the schedule matters. One that has not will happily hand you an over-cured pattern.
  5. Do you cast, or do you partner? Neither answer is wrong. Not knowing which one you are buying is.

Where This Fits With Owning a Machine

The honest split: if you print patterns most weeks, a small castable-capable machine pays back quickly and outsourcing becomes overflow cover.
