3D Printing Services Near Me: How the Directory Works

3D Prototyping Hub·

The 3D Prototyping Hub directory lists over 2,000 US-based 3D printing service providers across every state. Here's exactly how it works, how providers are vetted, and how to use it to find the right shop for your project.

What the Directory Is

3D Prototyping Hub is a vertical directory for additive manufacturing services in the United States. It serves one specific purpose: connect buyers who need parts printed with service providers who can print them.

The directory covers all 50 states. Provider listings include business name, location, available technologies, materials, and contact information. Buyers browse, filter, and submit quote requests. Providers respond directly.

This is different from a general Google search or a Google Maps query in a few important ways:

  • Providers are categorized by technology. You can filter to only see shops that run SLA, or only see providers in a specific state. Google Maps doesn't have this filter.
  • Quote requests go on-platform. When you submit a request through a listing, it's captured and logged. Providers receive the request and contact you. No scraping contact info from a website, no finding a phone number that's been disconnected.
  • Listings are verified. Providers are reviewed before appearing in the directory. Claimed listings have been verified by the provider against their actual business. This reduces the stale-listing problem that plagues general business directories.

How the Search Works

The provider search is at 3dprototypinghub.com/providers. Filters available:

  • State — filter to a specific US state
  • City — narrow to a specific city or metro area
  • Technology — FDM, SLA, SLS, DMLS, and other process types
  • Services — prototyping, production, inspection, post-processing, reverse engineering

Search results are ordered by provider tier: Featured providers appear first, followed by Claimed providers, followed by unclaimed listings. Within each tier, results are alphabetical.

You don't need to create an account to search or filter. The full directory is accessible to any buyer.

How Provider Listings Work

There are three types of listings in the directory:

Unclaimed listings are created by the 3D Prototyping Hub team from public business data. They contain basic information — name, location, technology category — but contact details may be incomplete or outdated. The provider has not interacted with the directory.

Claimed listings are verified by the provider. The business owner has confirmed the listing, updated their profile information, and added accurate contact details. A Claimed badge appears on these listings. Claimed providers rank above unclaimed listings in search results.

Featured listings have upgraded beyond claimed status. Featured providers appear at the top of search results in their geographic and technology categories. Featured placement is available for providers who want maximum visibility to buyers browsing the directory.

How Quote Requests Work

From any provider listing, you'll see a Get a Quote or contact module. When you fill out and submit the form:

  1. Your request (name, email, city, project description, budget) is stored on the platform.
  2. The provider is notified of the request.
  3. The provider contacts you directly — typically by email or phone — to discuss your project and provide a quote.

A few things to know:

Requests go to the specific provider you selected. The directory doesn't automatically distribute your request to multiple providers. If you want to compare quotes, submit a request from each listing individually — it takes under two minutes per submission.

There is no account required. You don't need to register to submit a quote request. Enter your project information, submit, and wait for the provider to follow up.

Response time varies by provider. Most claimed providers respond within 1–2 business days. Unclaimed providers may have slower response times since they haven't configured notifications. If a provider doesn't respond within 3 business days, submit a request to a different listing.

How to Get the Most Out of the Directory

Filter Before You Browse

If you know the technology you need, apply the filter before looking at individual listings. There's no value in browsing FDM-only shops if your project requires SLS nylon. The technology filter eliminates this immediately.

Submit Complete Project Information

Providers quote faster and more accurately when you include: part geometry description (or better, a link to your STL), material requirements, quantity, required tolerances, and timeline. Vague requests — "I need a part 3D printed" — generate slower, less accurate quotes. Specific requests — "I need 3 SLA resin prototypes in Formlabs Tough 2000, approximately 4x3x2 inches, tolerance ±0.005 inches, needed within 7 days" — get actionable quotes.

Contact 2–3 Providers for Comparison

For first-time projects or unfamiliar technologies, contact multiple providers. The goal isn't to find the lowest price — it's to find the provider who responds with the fastest, most detailed, most professionally structured quote. Response quality is a leading indicator of project delivery quality. A provider who asks clarifying questions before quoting is preferable to one who quotes blind.

Use Location Pages for Geographic Research

The directory has location pages for major US states and cities — for example, California providers or Georgia providers. These pages aggregate local providers and can be faster for buyers who want to start with geographic proximity before filtering by technology.

Read Provider Descriptions

Claimed providers write their own descriptions, which surfaces specialization information not visible in filters — ISO certifications, industry expertise, specific material capabilities, minimum order quantities. A two-minute read of a provider description often eliminates a round-trip quote request for a project that doesn't fit.

If No Local Provider Fits

A few scenarios where a directory search won't yield a good match:

  • Very specialized materials — some specialty resins, high-temp engineering thermoplastics, or uncommon metal alloys are not widely available locally. Online national platforms (Protolabs, Craftcloud) have broader material libraries.
  • Very large format parts — industrial-scale FDM (1 meter+ build envelope) and large-format SLS are available at fewer than 50 US facilities. The directory covers these where possible, but national sourcing is sometimes necessary.
  • Micro-precision tolerances — sub-0.001 inch tolerance work (jewelry, medical implants, optics) requires specialized metrology-grade equipment and certified post-processing. Only a subset of directory providers offer this.

For these cases, the provider contact section of each listing includes direct contact information for claimed listings — call or email to discuss non-standard requirements before requesting a formal quote.

Adding a Provider to the Directory

If your business provides 3D printing services and is not listed, submit via Add Your Listing. The form captures your business name, location, technologies, materials, and contact information. Listings go through a review before appearing in the directory. There is no cost to submit.
